The panel names those connected with St Matthew's who fell in the first world war.

THIS COMMUNION RAIL WAS ERECTED BY THE PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE MEN
CONNECTED WITH THIS CHURCH, WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 - 1918.
St Matthew's church was located on Lord Street, Stalybridge.
It was established in the early 1900s, and closed in 1990, the war memorial was then transferred to St Mark's.
